Kolkata, Nov.8 (ANI): Members of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) held a protest rally against the West Bengal Government, complaining about the wrong industrial policies framed by the latter.
Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT), a cargo handling firm jointly promoted by ABG group of India and French logistics company LDA, announced on October 31 that it would be ending its operations at the Haldia port in West Bengal due to unsafe work conditions.
Operations of HBT, which handles cargo with mechanised cranes in berth No 2 and No 8 at the Haldia Dock Complex, had been stopped since mid-September.
The cargo firm had retrenched 275 employees citing that they were surplus.
HBT's exit from the Haldia Port exposed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's lie that full police protection was being provided at Haldia.
Talking to reporters at the rally in Kolkata city of the state on Thursday (November 08), Congress Party leader Pradip Bhattacharya called for a tripartite meeting so that the issue could be resolved.
"We demand with this rally, this procession to the state government and we have created pressure for the state government so that they can call the tripartite meeting and to find out a way so that workers can be absolved," said Bhattacharya.
Meanwhile, commenting on the violence in Dubrjapur district of the state, Bhattacharya demanded an enquiry by the federal police, the Central Bureau of Investigation.
"Dubrjapur incident has been done by the local police and the SP himself is involved in this thing. That is why I demanded immediately CBI investigation, if there is any CBI investigation then the problem what exactly happened, what problem occurred there, all these things will be exposed," said Bhattacharya.
Villagers in the district have been protesting against illegal land acquisition by a private coal mining company.
Banerjee came to power in West Bengal in 2011, ending more than three decades of Communist rule in the state. Colloquially known as "Didi", or "elder sister", Banerjee's supporters hail her as a champion of India's poor and dispossessed.
But her politics have been a thorn in the side of the government. Her protests were instrumental in blocking a slew of economic measures, from retail reform to allowing foreign direct investment into India's aviation and insurance sectors. (ANI)
