Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Nov.8 (ANI): Shopkeepers in Uttar Pradesh claim that there is a surge in the demand of the pocket-friendly Chinese lamps and lights ahead of the Hindu festival of lights 'Diwali.'
Recently, a survey conducted by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) revealed that there has been a yearly increase of 45 percent in the demand for Chinese manufactured products.
Talking to reporters in Gorakhpur city of the state on Thursday (November 08), shopkeepers said the Chinese lights are preferred as they are affordable and fancy.
"People prefer Chinese lights over Indian lights. The demand for Indian lights has declined considerably. There is a lot of variety in Chinese lights including lamps and fewer shaped lights. All of them are very cheap and people can afford to buy them," said a shopkeeper, Ayaz Husain.
He added that the cost of such lamps varies from 18 rupees (0.33 cents) to 900 rupees ($15.51).
Another shopkeeper, Rahul Singh said that there is dip in the demand of Indian lights as they are expensive as compared to Chinese lights.
"There is a lot of variety in Chinese lamps. Indian lights are costly and they are not very fancy. These Chinese lights fit into the budget of families. So, people get good quality within a good range," said a shopkeeper, Rahul Singh.
Diwali, which will fall on Tuesday (November 13) this year, is celebrated with great fervour and gaiety all over India as it marks the return of Hindu god Lord Ram to Ayodhya in northern India after he defeated Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka.
Legend says millions of lamps were lit when Lord Ram returned after 14 years of exile in forests and after he defeated Ravana.
Diwali is also celebrated in honour of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that goddess Lakshmi, signifying prosperity, showers her blessings upon those homes that are clean and well lit. (ANI)
