Chennai/Coimbatore, Nov.6 (ANI): Supporters and activists of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Party staged a protest on Tuesday for total liquor prohibition in Tamil Nadu.
MDMK cadres and supporters gathered in large numbers in Chennai to voice their anger.
They staged a mass demonstration demanding complete ban on sale and consumption of alcohol beverages in the province.
Interacting with reporters, MDMK leader R. Masilamani called for total prohibition.
"Our leader has taken up this issue so as far as the MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) is concerned, total prohibition is our target," said Masilamani.
He added that the party hopes for a healthier country and hence are demanding for the prohibition.
"If a person in a family drinks everyday, he spends more than 100 rupees per bottle of liquor. Expenditure on the liquor alone for five years by that one person is 5 lakh 25000 rupees. So he is shelling out 5 lakh 25000 rupees but government is giving 15,000 rupees as a freebie. So we are paying extra to the government, don't you think this is atrocity? So, we do not want any freebie. We want a healthier country, a healthier generation," added Masilamani.
He also demanded that the state government must implement the ban sans any further delay.
Meanwhile, in Coimbatore, protesters took to the streets shouting anti-government slogans as they pressed their demand for the complete ban on the sale of liquor.
Incidentally, Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram are the only officially declared dry states of India. (ANI)
