Election Commission rejects Swamy's plea seeking de-recognition of Congress Party

New Delhi, Tue, 06 Nov 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Nov. 6 (ANI): The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday rejected Janata Dal president Subramanian Swamy's plea to de-recognize the Congress Party.

The ECI said that Swamy's reasons for allowing de-recognition of the Congress Party were completely baseless.

Swamy, however, termed his plea as a mere procedure.

"I was expecting the EC to reject this plea, I will move to court," he said.

"The EC should have at least held a hearing, which they didn't do. This is a very pliant institution and is undermined by the Congress," added Swamy.

In its four-page reply to Swamy, the ECI said that it could act only if there were any violations of the Model Code of Conduct, and added that Swamy had failed to show it.

Swamy's petition to the ECI was seen as a follow-up to his charges against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi over the acquisition of Associated Journals that published the newspaper National Herald.

Swamy had contended that the Congress should be de-registered after reports came out that the party had loaned Rs 90 crore to the National Herald. (ANI)
