New Delhi, Nov. 2 (ANI): Taking on the Congress-led UPA Government, former Chief of Army Staff, General (Retd.) V.K. Singh, on Friday backed a farmers' body demand for rejection of the Rangarajan Committee Report on freeing the sugar sector, and declared that he would support a gherao of the Parliament next month.
General (Retd.) Singh, who joined hands with the Rahstriya Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (RKMS) on the issue of plight of sugarcane farmers, backed its convener V.M. Singh's call for Parliament gherao on December 4.
"I am endorsing a call in which interests of the farmers must be pre-dominant in whatever policies we look at," he said.
General (Retd.) Singh, however, clarified that he had not decided yet over taking part in the agitation himself, but called upon the people supporting the farmers to participate in the gherao.
General (Retd.) Singh, who addressed a press conference here along with Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan (RKMS) Convenor V.M. Singh, said the committee's recommendation on doing away with state advisory price (SAP) and cane reservation area would adversely affect the farmers' of northern states.
To a poser on whether he was on the side of veteran social activist Anna Hazare or activist-turned politician Arvind Kejriwal, General (Retd.) Singh said: "I am with any individual or person, who wants to work for welfare of the nation because I always consider nation comes first always and everywhere." (ANI)
