Sydney, Nov. 2 (ANI): The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has proposed a new rule for Australian athletes wanting to compete at the Olympics that they would be required to sign a statutory declaration stating they have no doping history.
AOC President John Coates said coaches and officials will also have to sign the statutory declaration.
"If they don't sign, they don't go to the Games, they won't be selected. What I don't want is for the AOC to have egg on its face like cycling has," the Sydney Morning herald quoted Coates, as saying, in a statement.
Coates wants his proposal to be ratified as policy at an AOC executive board meeting in Melbourne later this month, which would then take effect immediately.
"In my opinion we simply cannot allow the name of the AOC to be damaged, like that of the International Cycling Union, for not having taken every reasonable step possible to ensure that no person in authority on our Olympic Team has a doping history," Coates said.
The statutory declaration would form part of the Team Agreement that Australian athletes, coaches and officials must sign before being selected for an Olympics, the paper said.
Coates also renewed his call for the federal government to strengthen the powers of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, he added. (ANI)
