Osmania Varsity students protest in Hyderabad over Telangana State demand

Hyderabad, Thu, 01 Nov 2012 ANI

Hyderabad, Nov.1 (ANI): Violence erupted outside Osmania University as students clashed with policemen while they continued to press their demand for the formation of separate Telangana state.

Students holding flags came out onto the streets of Hyderabad on Thursday to protest against the Congress-ruled state government.

Osmania University has long been the hotbed of the political movement for the creation of the Telangana state.

The Spokesperson of Osmania University Joint Action Committee, Krishank, slammed the Congress government for not realising the importance of creating Telangana.

"The Congress and UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government in the centre and the state are trying to fizzle out a popular and a serious demand of the people of Telangana, who have been asking since decades and decades for a separate state but unfortunately, Congress government has still been sleeping and they have not realised the importance of Telangana. Then, definitely, the people of Telangana will have to put down the Congress government in the coming 2014 elections. When we are sacrificing our lives, when there self-immolations here, when there are suicides here, unfortunately the Congress government is celebrating Andhra Pradesh's formation day, which is not only insulting the people of Telangana but also humiliating them .Then, definitely Telangana people will have to fight against the Congress government and we will see that the Congress government does not come into power next time," said Krishank.

The chances of an immediate resolution, paving the way for the formation of Telangana appears slim, as most politicians are sharply divided within their own parties on this issue.

The four-decade-old demand for Telangana, which is to be carved out of the economically less developed part of Andhra Pradesh, gathered momentum after the Congress party ruled federal government accepted the demand in principle.

The number of provincial lawmakers including ministers from the Telangana region who tendered their resignation was 33 and these were from the federal ruling Congress party and the regional outfits such as Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Praja Rajyam Party as well as three independents.

The demand for the separate state has seen violent protests and political power play, with more than 300 people killed between 1969 and 1972.

Several protests and shutdowns had brought Andhra Pradesh to a near halt in 2009 and 2010 as pro-Telangana activists persisted with their demand. (ANI)
