The Nobel Prize in Medicine for 2012 will be shared by two scientists. The Nobel Committee at Swedish Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Monday declared the name of the scientists.
The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be given jointly to John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent", Xinhua report says citing an institute statement.
"Their findings have revolutionised our understanding of how cells and organisms develop," it says further.
After announcement of Noble Prize for Medicine the name of the Nobel Prize winners for physics will be announced Tuesday, for chemistry Wednesday, literature Thursday, peace Friday and economics next Monday, the committee said.
The annual Nobel prizes are generally announced in October and are handed out Dec 10, on the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, who was a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite, who became philanthropist.
The Noble prizes have been awarded since 1901. A total of 853 persons or organisations have been awarded Nobel prizes from 1901 to 2011 out of which 199 people have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
