Itanagar, Oct 31 (ANI): India and Myanamar have added a new chapter in their bilateral relations with the first border liaison officers (BLOs) meeting held at Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district. They have decided to hold such meetings from time to time relating to local security, crime and other border issues.
India and Myanmar share a 1,643-km long border, including 440-km in Arunachal Pradesh.
A high level 12-member team led by Naga administration zone chairman U R Sanchyu and Pangsau sub-township representative division area MP U Maung Lun represented Myanmar. The Indian delegation was led by MoHA's director (NE-II) J P N Singh and Changlang District Commissioner Chanchal Yadav.
After holding threadbare discussions on issues on Tuesday, particularly relating to the security confronting both nations, the meeting unanimously decided to strengthen cooperation to sort out those problems.
Both nations are looking forward for improved socio-economic bilateral relations.
India has set a target of doubling the existing USD 1.5 billion trade between both the nations by 2015, which could rise further after the reopening of the 1736-km long historic Stillwell Road that links Ledo in Assam with Kunming in China to serve as a gateway to the rich South East Asian nations.
While top-ranking security officers have decided to share intelligence to ensure the border remains peaceful, the state's trade and commerce director, Tokong Pertin, who was a delegate to second Northeast India-Myanmar Business Conclave at the invitation of Indian Chamber of Commerce in Yangon in August last, briefed all on the outcome of the conclave.
The creation of BLOs was decided at the 17th meeting of both nations in Myanmar's capital, Nay Pyi Taw on May 17 last, with the aim of discussing and sorting out matters relating to local security and crime to strengthen bilateral cooperation on border issues relating to India and Myanmar. (ANI)
