Ahmedabad, Oct. 29 (ANI): A Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner V.S.Sampath and demanded removal of some state officials from election duty in poll bound Gujarat.
Speaking to reporters, Arjun Modhwadia, the president of Congress in Gujarat, said in Ahmedabad that the innocent traders were being harassed in the name of the Model Code of Conduct.
"Election commission has decided to curb circulation of black money during the elections but despite keeping watch on political parties, they (state officials) are harassing innocent traders. Secondly, there is no inquiry in the matter where in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Gujarat state government took money by using government machineries under a scheme," said Modhwadia.
Modhwadia added Modi had deployed his officials at key positions ahead of the elections in the state.
"We have requested election commission to take efficient steps and in order to have effective control over the elections they should transfer all officials from chief minister's office from election duty," said Modhwadia.
The first phase of the Gujarat assembly polls will be held on December 13, while the second will be held on December 17.
Counting of votes will take place on December 20.
Over 35,000 troopers from the paramilitary forces and at least 55,000 state police personnel are likely to be deployed for the upcoming Gujarat polls.
Gujarat has 182 assembly constituencies, 13 of which are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 26 for Scheduled Tribe (ST) with 3.78 crore (approximately 38 million) voters who waiting to exercise their franchise after being ruled by Modi for over a decade.
Modi is seen as the strongest opposition candidate for general elections in two years, thanks to rapid growth and a perception of corruption-free governance in his state, which has 5 percent of India's population but contributes 16 percent to national industrial output.(ANI)
