Agartala, Oct 27 (IANS) The use and sale of extra-loud firecrackers has been banned in Tripura ahead of Diwali.
Officials of the state pollution control board and police would jointly enforce the ban, sub-divisional magistrate Manik Lal Das told reporters Saturday.
He said enforcement teams led by deputy collectors would raid firecracker factories, markets, godowns and check vehicles to seize sound-emitting firecrackers.
The pollution control board has also issued a notification saying that under Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the maximum permissible noise level of firecrackers has been fixed at 90 decibel impulse noise at five metres from the source.
The Supreme Court in 2005 had ruled that there should be a complete ban on bursting sound-emitting firecrackers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
However, environmental activists said Tripura authorities usually fail to take any action after issuing such notifications on firecrackers.
