Batamaloo, Thu, 25 Oct 2012 ANI

Batamaloo (Jammu and Kashmir), Oct.25 (ANI): Forest rangers have rescued a year-old injured musk deer.

Nisar Ahmad, a rescue officer of the state wildlife department, said the rare deer had been bitten by dogs.

He said the animal is currently recuperating in a veterinary hospital.

"We don't know how it entered the human habitation but we will be investigating the matter," said Ahmad.

He said the deer had come from the Budgam area, which is connected to the upper reaches of the Himalayas.

In the past, several cases of musk deer being poached have been reported.

The deer is poached for obtaining musk, which is produced by the glands of the animal.

Musk is used in perfumes and traditional medicines and it fetches good revenue in the international market.

The killing of the musk deer is banned under Wildlife Act.

Musk deer are generally found in forested and alpine scrub habitats in the mountains of southern Asia and mainly in Himalayas. (ANI)
