BP drug may help protect against Alzheimer's

London, Wed, 24 Oct 2012 ANI

London, October 24 (ANI): A team of scientists at Imperial College London have found that a blood pressure drug can reduce brain inflammation and prevent memory loss.

They are hoping that the finding could revolutionise Alzheimer's disease treatment, the Daily Express reported.

The new research, published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, found that the drug called prazosin prevented memory loss in mice showing signs of Alzheimer's.

Previous studies have shown how blood pressure drugs can prevent Alzheimer's from occurring as well as slowing its progression.

High blood pressure is one of the known risk factors for developing Alzheimer's.

"We are really excited about these findings and the potential they may hold for the future," the Daily Express quoted researcher Dr Magdalena Sastre, of Imperial Collegeas saying. (ANI)
