Dikshit launches convertibel rickshaws for first time in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct. 23 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today launched convertible rickshaws promoted by an Mother NGO called "MNGO for Homeless - St. Stephens Hospital" from her residence.

The rickshaws are unique as being convertible as a night shelter for homeless rickshaws pullers.

It has been conceived and designed by the students and other staff members of St. Stephens College, University of Delhi.

Dikshit expressed pleasure over this innovation which would go a long way in putting an end to the ongoing practice of spending night at footpaths and road dividers across the city by the rickshaws pullers.

The new rickshaws are fitted with bulb and small ceiling fan apart from mosquito net and a battery.

A storage shelf has also been provided to keep essential daily items. The rickshaws have been launched as per micro financing principle as the rickshaws pullers would have to submit daily installment of Rs.50 in order to become the owner in due course.

Speaking on this occasion, Dikshit stated that her government would like to explore possibilities for grant of any incentive with an aim to make the cost reasonable.

The new rickshaws would be known as 'Sukun'. The Mission Director, Mission Convergence and Spl Secy to the CM, Sh Santosh D Vaidya was also present.

Dikshit further stated that her Government has been operating Jan Aahar Centers for providing full meal to the needy persons at Rs.15 only.

Further the government has been facilitating centers of Aap Ki Rasoi offering one time full nutritious free meal to destitute and other poor persons.

The government has decided to increase the present number of 53 Jan Aahar Centers and 15 Aap Ki Rasoi centers.

The new centers would also cater the needs of targeted persons apart from homeless rickshaws pullers. (ANI)
