Central university becomes main agenda ahead of Himachal assembly polls

Dharamsala , Sat, 20 Oct 2012 ANI

Dharamsala, Oct 20 (ANI): Establishment of a central university in hill town of Dharamsala is the main agenda ahead of assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh.

According to the students, the university should have an administrative office in Dharamsala and the rest of it is scattered in Dehra and Shahpur towns of the state.

Speaking to mediapersons on Friday (October 19), Rakesh Bhardwaj, a local said that the students want a university in Dharamsala and this issue will entirely affect vote bank.

"The youth of Dharamsala has kept Central University as the main issue for elections. The youth vote will be with the leader who will talk about the development of Central University and bringing it in Dharamsala," he said.

Candidates of both, main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and ruling Congress party played a blame-game over the issue.

BJP candidate Kishan Kapoor accused Congress government for delaying in giving an environmental clearance for land allotted to the university in Dharamsala.

"The government of India had demanded land for the university from the provincial government. We made the land available. But the forest clearance has to come from foreign ministry and the file is lying in the Delhi office from last four years. It is not getting a clearance because the intentions of the Central government are not right," he said.

Congress government in 2009 sanctioned the university land in Dharamsala.

Slamming opposition, Congress candidate Sudhir Sharma said unlike BJP, his party will establish the university when it comes to power.

"The university has definitely become an election issue. Himachal Pradesh was to get a central university, and Congress party had chosen Dharamsala for it. But the Bharatiya Janata Party came into power, one can say that the central university was decentralised. The university was divided into several parts with one in Dehra, one in Shahpur and some of it in Dharamsala," he said.

The legislative assembly of Himachal Pradesh consists of 68 seats, 42 of which were won by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the previous election.

The single-phase election in Himachal Pradesh will take place on November 04 while counting of votes is scheduled on December 20. (ANI)
