New Delhi, Oct 19 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday hit back at Congress President Sonia Gandhi over her claims of the UPA Government's commitment to fight against the rampant corruption.
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad laid emphasis on the latest disclosures by former Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrashekhar to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigating the 2G scam that Dr. Manmohan Singh had ignored his recommendation that an entry fee of Rs. 36,000 crore be charged for spectrum, and the fresh allegations against former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to target the ruling Congress Party.
"Every day new instances come about. Now, we have seen Virbhadra Singh's new land deals...appearing in Himachal Pradesh. He has been involved in a corruption case in which the court has taken cognisance, chargesheet has been filed by the CID apart from the allegations made by his own colleague...and now there is a land deal, which is highly suspicious," said Prasad.
"Madam Sonia Gandhi please reply to all this. You go and make loud claim in Karnataka, but why you are not permitting Dr. Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram, telling them to appear before the JPC. Why in coalgate action is not been taken against Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the Coal Minister? Why no action has been taken Sheila Dikshit in the Commonwealth Games? And what about projecting Virbhadra Singh as the top leader of your party in the Himachal election?" he added.
Addressing a public meeting in Mangalore yesterday, Sonia Gandhi said that other party has done what UPA has done to fight corruption.
"We all know corruption is a disease, a cancer. Who does it affect the most, it is the poor. No other party has done what UPA has done to fight corruption. We brought the RTI because we genuinely want to fight corruption," she said.
Launching a frontal attack on the BJP Government in Karnataka, Gandhi said the people want an end to the brazen and widespread corruption in the state.
Gandhi claimed that the people are fed up with the BJP in the state for it has made empty promises.
"The BJP has betrayed the mandate of the people. People want an end to the brazen and widespread corruption and failure that has marked the BJP Government and administration," she added.
Sonia Gandhi also accused the BJP of spreading lies against the Congress-led UPA Government.
"The BJP is spreading lies against us, we should counter their lies with unity, by talking in one voice," she said.
Sonia Gandhi, who is also the chairperson of the ruling UPA Government, claimed that the Centre had given Rs 80,000 crore to the Karnataka government in the past five years, but questioned whether the state government had used it in programmes meant for the welfare of people.
The Congress President further said the UPA wanted to bring the Lokpal Bill, but the BJP stopped the bill in the Rajya Sabha. (ANI)
