New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) Upscale south Delhi has the maximum number of dengue cases reported so far this season, according to official figures.
Dengue fever is a communicable disease which is transmitted by mosquito bite.
Out of 551 people afflicted, 207 were found down with the deadly disease in the area of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
"South Delhi comprises four zones. Many unauthorised colonies are here and the population is also very high in comparison to the other two corporations," N.K. Yadav, municipal health officer of SDMC, told IANS.
South Delhi is followed by north Delhi, where the civic agency has reported 201 cases.
In the East Delhi Municipal Corporation area, 117 people were afflicted by the disease.
"This is not the first time that south Delhi is affected the most by such a disease. It is being noticed regularly in the past few years," Yadav said.
"Thirty-three new cases of dengue were detected Thursday," said an MCD officer.
While 13 cases were from New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area, four cases were reported from Delhi Cantonment and three from railway area.
As per official figures, only one dengue death has been reported during this season -- that of a nine-year-old girl, who died at the All India Institute of Medical Science last month.
