New Delhi, Oct.18 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard met Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi here as part of her official visit to India.
Gillard is reported to have discussed ways to improve bilateral ties between the two countries.
Congress party leader Karan Singh and Commerce Minister Anand Sharma also took part in the parleys between Gillard and Gandhi.
Later, Gillard also met Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.
Gillard's visit has been significant as the main issue has been the prospects of Australia supplying uranium to India that had been stalled for quite some time now.
Australia had earlier refused to sell nuclear material to India because it had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
However, Gillard had been pushing to overturn the ban, removing a diplomatic thorn between the two countries and potentially opening up a new and growing market for Australian suppliers.
Earlier in the day, the Australian Prime Minister met her host and Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh and discussed the steps that need to be taken to strengthen economic relations.
The relations between the two countries had suffered over the surge in the number of racist attacks on the Indian students and cab drivers in Australia.
Gillard left New Delhi on Wednesday night. (ANI)
