'Break-up with Trinamool will revive Bengal Congress'

West Bengal,Politics, Mon, 15 Oct 2012 IANS

Kolkata, Oct 15 (IANS) The break-up with the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has opened up an "opportunity" for reviving the Congress in West Bengal, state party chief Pradip Bhattacharya said here Monday.

"The day Trinamool withdrew its support (to the UPA) and we pulled out from the state government, a new chapter started in West Bengal politics," Bhattacharya said.

"Earlier whenever we protested against the state government policies, we were told they had the consent of ministers from our party. Now, the situation has changed," he said at the party's state headquarters here while releasing an issue of party's Bengali weekly tabloid - 'Congress Barta'.

A day after the Trinamool Congress withdrew from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Sep 18, the Congress lawmakers in the state opted out of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led state government.

The state chief said his party had three political opponents in the state - the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Congress has also decided to launch the party's membership drive across the state Tuesday to draw more people and at the same time retain its support base.
