Palamu (Jharkhand), Oct.14 (ANI): Police in Jharkhand's Palamu District have nabbed a Maoist during a combing operation.
Superintendent of Police, Anoop T Mathew said that the arrested Maoist has been identified as Bhuiyan alias Ajit.
He said that Bhuiyan was the zonal commander of Communist Party of India (Maoists).
Bhuiyan was arrested based on intelligence inputs. The paramilitary outfit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the crack unit of Jaguar commandos and the Jharkhand Police jointly conducted raids in the village and nabbed him while he was on a visit to meet his family members in his village, Jogiasudhi.
Mathew termed Bhuyian's arrest as a great victory since he had been involved in 25 criminal cases.
"He was associated with the Maoist outfit for the past ten years and he has been the Zonal Commander of Oel Sangh zone. He is well known as an explosive expert of that zone. His name is involved in 25 cases," said Mathew.
Bhuiyan was reportedly involved in the attack on former Speaker of Jharkhand Inder Singh Namdhari near Garu village in adjoining Latehar district, in which eight police personnel were killed on December 3, 2011.
Bhuiyan had video-graphed the incident, which was revealed following a recovery of a CD from his hideout.
Mathew also said that the CD recovered would certainly help them in getting evidences of others involved in various Maoist activities.
"He was also named as an accused in connection with firing on a chopper engaged in an anti-Maoist operation in which eight personnel were injured. He has been actively involved in 25 other cases of violence," added Mathew.
Recently, Maoists have been trying to strengthen their base by rounding up school children and confiscating their educational certificates and compelling them to join the group.
In the last few years, the rebels have stepped up their efforts against the government as well as the locals, after various locals complained that Maoist activities such as killings and abductions increased considerably in the area.
The guerrilla war, waged mostly from the forests of central and eastern India now poses the biggest internal security challenge, say analysts.
Hundreds of people have been killed and injured in the violence, perpetrated by the rebels as well as security forces in counter insurgency operations.
Maoists have also significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in the states of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa.
Also known as Naxals, the rebels have fought for decades in a wide swathe of central and eastern India, including many resource-rich regions, where tensions run high between poor farmers and industrial developers.
The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of millions of landless people and marginal farmers. (ANI)
