Hyundai Motors plant workers strike work

Tamil Nadu,Business/Economy, Mon, 08 Oct 2012 IANS

Chennai, Oct 8 (IANS) Workers at car maker Hyundai Motors India Ltd's (HMIL) production plant near here have gone on strike again, an official said Monday.

"Workers of TVS Logistics are on strike demanding negotiated wage settlement, reinstatement of a dismissed worker and revocation of suspension orders issued for three workers. The company is a contractor for providing logistics, material handling and other services at Hyundai Motors," R. Sridhar, general secretary of Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) said.

"A worker was dismissed for bringing workers of TVS Logistics to a meeting organised by HMIEU," Sridhar added.

As a mark of solidarity with the striking workers of TVS Logistics, the members of HMIEU decided to skip lunch and dinner Monday.

Sridhar said that as the workers were on strike, the material-handling work was being affected at HMIL's two plants.

However, HMIL has denied a loss of production due to the strike by TVS Logistics workers.

In a statement issued here, HMIL said: "Hyundai Motors India today said that it did not suffer any production loss because of a workers' strike at its logistics service provider, TVS Logistics."

HMIL said none of its permanent workers were involved in any form of agitation at the plant.

However, an HMIEU member told IANS that production would certainly get hit as TVS Logistics workers will be on strike Tuesday.

TVS Logistics has deployed over 1,300 workers at HMIL.

"Today's protest by a group of employees is illegal and totally unjustified. The matter is pending with the government authority, namely the Assistant Commissioner of Labour, hence we will not be in a position to comment on the issue at this point of time," an official of TVS Logistics told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

He said workers' wage settlement is done project/region wise as it depends on value- added services that the customers opt for and on the project requirement on a case-to-case basis.

While HMIEU's Sridhar said the majority of the TVS Logistics workers were on strike, an official of TVS Logistics disputed that number and said that only 300 workers were on strike.
