Guwahati/New Delhi, Oct.7 (ANI): Both the Centre and the Assam Government are taking steps to manage the flood situation in the state, and provide immediate emergency relief to people in the affected areas.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has already undertaken an aerial survey of the flood affected areas. He visited Morigaon, Darrang, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, besides the severely-affected Kaziranga National Park and the world's largest river island, Majuli.
State authorities are air dropping rations, medical and other necessary supplies for people in these areas.
The situation has largely improved as the flood waters have started receding in many areas.
The state government has announced a relief package of Rs.200 crore for reviving agriculture sector in Assam. It has also decided to restructure the Brahmaputra Board into a body, which will manage water resources of the entire north eastern region.
"In the (relief) camps, there are about 362,000 people and the rest are leaving. In some places, people will have to stay back for a few more days because many bridges cannot be repaired due to the heavy waters. So, water will remain for a few more days. So, some people have to bear with this for sometime and the rest will be leave gradually," said Gogoi after the recent aerial survey.
The floods have displaced over 300000 people and inundated 3.21 lakh hectares of cultivated land.
About 18 people in 20 districts have lost their lives. Cattle and other animals have also died.
The Centre has sent troops and medical personnel to the flood-hit areas.
Several disaster management teams are working hard to take people to safe regions from disaster prone areas.
Over 400 relief camps have been set up in Assam to accommodate people.
Will continue to provide relief to the people
To the best of our efforts, we are giving all the relief we can. The people, who would be staying back for some more time, will be given clothes as well, not only clothes, but also baby food or cooking oil as well. We are doing all this in the best way possible. There are not many complaints about relief. Though they have some complaints, but wherever I have gone, there has been no complaint as such," Gogoi said.
Flood waters had breached river banks and reached the towns. In some places, it was running around 98 cm above the danger mark.
But the worst affected are villagers whose houses have been damaged and their cattle died in the floods and rehabilitation work will take some time. (ANI)
