FDI row: Trade Unions to protest outside Parliament on Dec. 20

Ludhiana , Fri, 05 Oct 2012 ANI

Ludhiana, Oct 5 (ANI): Expressing disappointment with the Congress-led UPA Government's slew of reforms announced over the last one month, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Gurudas Dasgupta on Friday said trade unions would be staging a protest outside the Parliament on December 20 and also call for a two-day strike in the entire country on December 20 and 21 to oppose the move.

Dasgupta informed that all the trade unions would be staging a 'jail bharo' agitation in the entire country on December 18 and 19.

""Our programme is that on 18th and 19th of December, we will do a 'jail bharo' agitation in the entire country. Lakhs of innocent farmers will be going to jails. We will stage a protest outside the Parliament on December 20 and we will be calling for a two-day strike in the entire country on 20th and 21st ahead of the presentation of the budget," said Dasgupta.

"All the centrally recognised trade unions, they are 11 in number, have united without any political bias. And for the first time in India, we are calling two-days strike on 20th and 21st," he added.

Dasgupta further said that he was not against the FDI.

"We are not against FDI. FDI should come, the factories should be built and the labourers should be employed and given salaries. The work should be done as per the Indian law," said Dasgupta.

"But we oppose FDI in retail, insurance, forward trading, pension fund management. We want that concrete steps should be taken to solve the problem of recession in India," he added.

Dasgupta, who was in Ludhiana as part of his programme, further informed that all the trade unions would in the coming days travel the whole country on the issue of inflation and minimum wage.

Gurudas Dasgupta had earlier last month said the decision to allow FDI in retail will help only capitalists and not the farmers and consumers in the country.

The TMC, the biggest partner of the Congress Party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, had earlier pulled out over big-ticket economic reforms, reducing coalition to a minority government and bringing even more instability to an already volatile political landscape.

The government took some decisions earlier, including the hike in diesel price, cap the supply of subsidised LPG cylinders to six per household in a year and approving 51 percent Foreign Direct Investment or FDI in multi-brand retail.

Trinamool Congress, which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha, withdrew support to the Congress-led UPA Government and pulled out its six ministers from the government on September 21 after being disappointed with the announcement by the government of new reforms (ANI)
