Siliguri (West Bengal), Oct 1 (ANI): The festive fever has gripped the state, with artisans here designing and crafting traditional ornaments such as 'Dak Shaj' for the idols of Goddess Durga, ahead of popular Puja festival.
The traditional ornament 'Dak Shaj' is the conventional form of decoration and ornamentation of the idol of Goddess Durga and is extensively used during the Durga Puja festival.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Bacchu Malakar, an artisan, said his family has been engaged in this work for more than a century.
"We are very happy doing this. We start our work early in morning and continue till late night. We are making Dak Shaj and others ornaments," he said.
These sets of ornaments are made out of thermocol, mica and other glowing materials used for decorations.
The price varies from a few thousands to more than ten thousand rupees, depending upon the intricate designs of the ornaments.
Mampi Dhar, another artisan opined that more people should join the industry that will offer employment to the youth.
"We want more people in this industry from this region, so they can also earn money and improve their economic condition," Dhar said.
Preparations of idols and ornaments engage participation of workers on large scale, thereby generating short-term employment opportunities.
This year the famous five day long festival will begin on October 20 with idols of the Hindu goddess Durga ceremoniously placed in Puja pandals for public worship.
The festival culminates with the immersion of the 'Durga' idols in water bodies. (ANI)
