Mumbai, Sep 27 (IANS) A benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading 74 points higher in afternoon trade Thursday. Auto, capital goods and FMCG stocks were the best performers.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,659.75 points, was ruling at 18,706.58 points, 74.41 points or 0.40 percent up from its previous day's close at 18,632.17 points.
The Sensex touched a high of 18,735.95 points and a low of 18,644.77 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 48.76 points while the smallcap index was 45.32 points high.
The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also ruling 0.33 percent up at 5,681.95 points.
On the sectoral front, the BSE auto index was up 103.21 points, capital goods was up 108.73 points and FMCG index was up 46.33 points.
Major Sensex gainers were Tata Power, up 5.11 percent at Rs.107.90; Larsen and Toubro, up 2.10 percent at Rs.1,594.60; Mahindra and Mahindra, up 2.06 percent at Rs.863.65; Jindal Steel, 1.54 percent at Rs.430.70; and Maruti Suzuki, up 1.50 percent at Rs.1,334.
The main losers were BHEL, down 1.38 percent at Rs.249.60; Wipro, down 1 percent at Rs.375.90; Infosys, down 0.98 percent at Rs.2,561.35; Coal India, down 0.81 percent Rs.355.25; and ONGC, down 0.78 percent at Rs.278.85.
Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei was up 0.48 percent while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was trading 1.16 percent higher. Shanghai's composite index was also up 2.60 percent.
