Maharashtra Cabinet resignations: NCP MLAs leave final decision to Sharad Pawar

Mumbai , Wed, 26 Sep 2012 ANI

Mumbai, Sept 26 (ANI): Members of the Maharashtra State Assembly affiliated to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday unanimously decided that their leader Sharad Pawar will be the final arbiter on the issue of state cabinet resignations, including that of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

The MLAs decided to postpone a crucial meeting of the NCP Legislature Party following the death of NCP leader and former Maharastra Assembly Speaker Krishnarao R. Desai, alias Babasaheb Kupekar.

Wednesday's meeting was called a day after Ajit Pawar announced his resignation from the state government. At least 19 other ministers loyal to him also said that they were ready to hand in their resignations in wake of the allegations against the NCP of being involved in a massive irrigation scam.

The NCP ministers have sent their resignations to state party chief Madhukar Pichad with a demand that the NCP quit the coalition.

NCP leader Nawab Malik had earlier on Tuesday said that a party council meeting would be held on Wednesday to take a decision in the matter.

NCP leader Praful Patel said his party is confident of coming untainted in the probe.

"I feel that what Ajit Pawar has done, and the party supports it; it is a good move because the White Paper on irrigation, which has been demanded time and again, (and it) will be brought out immediately, and I have also spoken to the Chief Minister post Ajit Pawar's resignation, that it should be brought out at the earliest, so that the facts are before the people," Patel told mediapersons in New Delhi.

"Ajit Pawar has already stated that let the facts come out, and he is very happy to face if any consequences are there," he added.

Ajit Pawar has been accused of hurriedly giving clearance to 32 irrigation projects.

"I have resigned from my position. If the CBI wants to investigate the matter, let them do so," he said. (ANI)
