Purulia (WB), Sep 26 (ANI): Top police officials from Maoist-infested regions held a meeting on Tuesday at West Bengal's Purulia district to chalk out a strategy to combat the activities of the rebels.

Four inspector generals (IGs), four deputy inspector generals (DIGs) and nine superintendents of police (SPs) participated in the two-hour meeting here.

The police officials exchanged information about the Maoist activities in the region and discussed the measures that need to be taken to curb the rising activities of the Maoists.

Gangeshwar Singh, Inspector General of State Police (Western Range) of West Bengal, said that they were keeping a strict vigil on the activities of the Maoists in the region and added that they have planned to initiate joint action against the left wing extremists.

"Although Maoist activity has stopped in certain areas, we are still keeping a strict vigil. Many Maoist attacks have occurred in Orissa and Jharkhand area and it is possible that they could regroup in the border area of Jangalmahal. We are planning to initiate joint action and we will discuss how to help other states to curb this problem," Singh said.

R P Kochi, Inspector General, Balasore, said that despite Maoists operating on the other side of the border, they were coordinating with other states to root them out.

"There are various members of Maoist groups operating on the other sides of the border in Orissa as well as West Bengal and even in Jharkhand. So, there is cooperation and coordination among all the three states. As far as Orissa is concerned, we are on a very good footing and understanding and we will continue this understanding with both the states," he said

Maoists have significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. (ANI)
