Siliguri, Sep 26 (ANI): The labour department in West Bengal Siliguri's district conducted a survey to ascertain the condition of labourers engaged in tea plantation and also enable the government to formulate welfare schemes, which will be beneficial for them.
The officials on Tuesday said that it would be a comprehensive survey covering drinking water, housing, power, health infrastructure, and education for the children, condition of the labour unions and demands of the workers of the plantations.
The Joint Labour Commissioner, North-Bengal, Mohammad Rizwan, said the objective of the survey was to assess ground realities and to resolve their problems.
"The labour department took another thorough survey so that the total working condition of the workmen are ascertained, whether their social aspects are being looked into or not, whether their housing facilities are being provided as per law or not, whether they are given health facility, I mean hospital facility as per law or not, whether they are being paid wages, gratuity, provident fund (PF) etc on due time or not. What are the social costs incurred by the employers on that part of these things, I mean housing," Rizwan.
India is one of the major producers and exporters of tea in the world market.
India's tea production rose for the first time in nine months in June to 122.2 million kilograms, up 6.5 percent from a year earlier, as plucking improved in northeastern and southern parts of the country, the state-run Tea Board informed in a statement.
However, the country's tea production in the first six months of 2012 fell 5.7 percent on year to 338 million kilograms as unfavourable weather in the top-producing state Assam hampered plucking earlier this year. (ANI)
