New Delhi, Sept 20 (ANI): Senior Janata Dal (United) leader Shivanand Tiwari on Thursday said the Centre's economic policies are being directed by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Tiwari, protesting against the Centre's 'anti-people' reforms while observing the nationwide shutdown, blamed the Congress' economic policies for spiraling inflation and rampant corruption.
Interacting with mediapersons here, he said, "The policies of the Congress party resulted in inflation in the country and it has also only led to an increase in scams and corruption. The country is now dependent on foreign investment for growth and the economic policy of the country is being formulated on the directions of the World Bank and the IMF. It is for the first time that there is such serious opposition against the government policies and this is a new chapter in the history of Indian politics."
Further, Tiwari appreciated Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee for withdrawing support from the ruling UPA coalition, and termed it an "honesty protest" against the faulty economic policies.
"I would also like to congratulate Mamata Banerjee for starting an honest protest against this policy of the government," he added.
Last week, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's government raised the prices of diesel and put a lid on the number of cooking gas cylinders households could get at cheap prices in a year.
The government also eased norms to let international supermarket chains enter India's lucrative retail market.
Major political parties have opposed the economic decisions calling them anti-people and have virtually paralysed normal life across the country with their general strike, being observed across the nation today. (ANI)
