London, Sep 19(ANI): Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has claimed the club wants to become the first team to win two Champions League titles consecutively, and added he has the right squad to do so.
Marco van Basten's AC Milan successfully defended their European Cup trophy in 1990, but no club since than has ever retained it, and it has never been done in its current guise as the Champions League.
"It has proved impossible in the past but we want to achieve the impossible," the Telegraph quoted Di Matteo, as saying.
Di Matteo stressed on the fact that more than winning the Champions League it was qualifying for next season in Europe's elite championship that was important.
The Italian admitted Chelsea would have failed to sign big players like Eden Hazard and Oscar if it wasn't for their qualification to the Champions League this season.
"The most important thing was not that we won the Champions League but that it qualified us for the competition again this year," Di Matteo said.
"It would have been very difficult [to convince players to sign] because they want to be involved in the biggest club competition in the world so it would have been extremely difficult to attract these players," he added.
Chelsea would start their Champions League title defence by facing Italian champions Juventus in their opening match of the group stage on Wednesday. (ANI)
