Mumbai/Hyderabad, Sep 19 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopinath Munde today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to resign, a day after the Trinamool Congress Party withdrew support to the UPA-II Government over a dispute related to reforms.
"UPA Government has lost its majority. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has not only withdrawn its support, but has also said that she would never support the UPA Government in the future. I think, morally the government has lost its majority and Prime Minister should immediately resign from the post," said Munde.
Munde further urged the allies of the UPA government to withdraw their support so that the people of the country do not face the brunt of corruption and spiralling inflation.
"As we all are well aware that country is reeling under corruption and inflation, I appeal to the DMK, Samajwadi Party (SP), NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) led by Sharad Pawar to withdraw support from the Congress Party if they are with the common people and give people a chance to elect new government. I request all these political parties to support common man and not the Congress," said Munde.
Meanwhile, in Hyderabad Telugu Desam Party (TDP) N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the Congress is playing politics alone by putting the burden on the common man.
"Naturally, they should have consulted coalition partners, they didn't consult coalition partners, automatically, there will be a reaction, so we had to wait and watch, what is going to happen but Congress-UPA government is going one sided. They want to divert the attention of the people from corruption charges, they are not taking any action on corruption. And on the contrary, they are taking so many hard decisions to hit the public, this is very unfortunate," said Naidu.
The Congress-led UPA Government appears to be in trouble as of now following Banerjee's declaration that the Trinamool Congress would be pulling out of the UPA Government.
The Congress Core Group met at Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's official 7, Race Course Road residence here earlier in the day to decide on the next steps in wake of the TMC withdrawal from the ruling UPA Government.
The meeting of the Congress Core Group, which included Dr. Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A.K. Antony, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel, lasted for nearly two hours.
Trinamool Congress, the second biggest constituent of the UPA with 19 MPs, dealt a major blow to the Manmohan Singh Government when it decided to withdraw its support on the issue of petroleum price hike, FDI in retail and corruption.
The TMC's decision brings the UPA's effective strength in the 545-seat Lok Sabha from 273 to 254, which is slightly below the halfway mark.
This would make the Congress-led UPA Government more dependent on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), both of which extend outside legislative support to the UPA regime. (ANI)
