Hyderabad, Sep 14 (IANS) A peaceful protest was held here Friday against a blasphemous anti-Islam American movie.
Protestors set afire an effigy symbolising the US in the old city of Hyderabad. Police said no untoward incident took place during the protest.
Immediately after Friday prayers, dozens of Muslim youth came out on streets in Dabeerpura raising slogans against the US. The protest was led by Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) corporator Amjadullah Khan Khalid.
Police had made massive security arrangements at the historic Mecca Masjid to prevent any possible trouble. No rally was taken out from the mosque, which has witnessed several violent protests in the past.
Police have already tightened security at the US consulate building located in Begumpet area.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma, who supervised the security arrangements near Mecca Masjid, told reporters that the police would act firmly against anybody trying to hurt sentiments of any community.
The police chief said police were make efforts attempts to get the film removed from YouTube and other social networking sites.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi also called on top police officials to ensure that circulation of the movie through social media was stopped.
Owaisi, who is president of Muslim political party Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), called for strict monitoring of the content over social networking websites. He appealed to the Muslim community to maintain peace.
Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) and other Muslim organizations have also urged the government to take steps to remove the blasphemous movie from the sites.
