New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) BJP president Nitin Gadkari Friday sent a legal notice to Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh for allegedly defaming him by his comments on his business partner's deals and sought a public apology.

Accusing the Congress leader of "concocted and scandalous" comments, Gadkari alleged that Digvijay Singh "deliberately and recklessly" made false allegations against him in an attempt to lower his image in the eyes of the public.

"The wild and concocted allegations made by you, noticee (Digvijay Singh), are completely concocted, defamatory, scandalous and unparliamentary and have maligned the image of my client," said the notice sent by a lawyer on behalf of Gadkari.

The notice mentioned that recently Digvijay Singh made allegations that Ajay Sancheti, Gadkari's business partner, earned profits of Rs.490 crore from coal mines in Chhattisgarh.

The legal notice referring to various media reports said: "The defamatory, scandalous, false and reckless statements and news items have been widely published, circulated and read by public at large and have lowered the dignity of my client in the eyes of the public."

"Such scandalous, fabricated, defamatory and reckless allegations have been made by you with ulterior motives and wrongful intent to malign and tarnish the image of my client."

It asked Digvijay Singh to tender apology within three days of receiving the notice.

"Issue public apology and withdraw your defamatory statements against my client within three days of receipt of this legal notice, failing which my client will be constrained to take appropriate legal action against you including prosecuting you for criminal defamation at your risk, cost and consequences," said the notice.
