Sensex trades flat after early gains

Mumbai, Sep 13 (IANS) Erasing its early day gains, a benchmark index of Indian equities markets was trading flat late Thursday afternoon.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,023.95 points, was ruling at 18,010.04 points, 10.01 points or 0.06 percent up from its previous day's close at 18,000.03 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 18,062.68 and a low of 17,976.28 points in intra-day trade. The BSE midcap index was up 1.66 points while the smallcap index was 0.19 points lower.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also ruling flat at 5,430.90 points.

On the sectoral front, the BSE oil and gas index was up 66.35 points while PSU index was up 44.87 points and capital goods index was up 50.29 points.

Top Sensex gainers were Hero MotoCorp, up 2.03 percent at Rs.1,822; BHEL, up 1.57 percent at Rs.200.75; ONGC, up 1.38 percent at Rs.283.65; Bajaj Auto, up 1.32 percent at Rs.1,714.35; and Gail India, up 1.01 percent at Rs.370.40.

The main losers included Bharti Airtel, down 2.78 percent at Rs.253.85; Cipla, down 2.48 percent at Rs.369.40; Sterlite Inds, down 1.31 percent at Rs.94; Jindal Steel, down 1.26 percent at Rs.342.10; and Mahindra and Mahindra down 1.19 percent at Rs.753.05.

Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei was up 0.39 percent while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.14 percent. Shanghai's composite index was trading 0.76 percent lower.

The European markets were in red. France's CAC was down 0.64 percent, while Germany's DAX was trading 0.33 percent lower. Britain's FTSE 100 was also down 0.06 percent.
