Congress shutdown hits normal life in Odisha

Bhubaneshwar, Mon, 10 Sep 2012 ANI

Bhubaneshwar, Sep 10 (ANI): Public transport was hit in Odisha on Monday as the opposition Congress Party called for a shutdown to protest the police excesses on its workers during a party rally here last week.

Train services and commercial establishments have also been hit by the shutdown.

Stranded passengers at the railway stations were troubled by the shutdown call, as they had to make changes in their itineraries.

"We had thought that the railway services would be shut for sometime, but the services are disrupted for the entire day. Our entire travel schedule has changed. We have no idea, if the trains are going to ply or not," said Raj Shekhar, a passenger.

According to media reports, the police have arrested over 70 Congress workers. However, there are no reports of any violence.

The protesters blamed the ruling Biju Janata Dal government in the state for not implementing the schemes introduced by the central government for the provinces.

"As you all know that on the September 6, when the monsoon session was on, the Congress Pradesh Committee, Odisha, had a massive rally on that day to protest against the government. Whatever program is going from centre for the BPL families or for the development of the state, that money is not reaching the people. Lakhs of posts are vacant. Young boys and girls are running after jobs. There has been no permanent job to young boys and girls," said state Congress leader Bhupinder Singh.

The clashes had broken out on September 6, when Congress party workers were protesting near the legislative assembly and demanding the resignation of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for his alleged involvement in coal block scam. (ANI)
