Kanpur/ Mumbai, Sept 10 (ANI): Parents of arrested cartoonist, Aseem Trivedi, on Monday said that their son had only raised his voice against rampant corruption in the country and did not breach any law.
Speaking to reporters at a protest rally in Kanpur, Trivedi's mother Pratibha said that she supported his endeavour to express his resentment towards graft.
"My son just stood up against corrupt lawmakers and rampant corruption in the country. He made a cartoon depicting the parliament because of the corrupt practices that are prevalent in the country. I do not think he is wrong and I support him. We also met Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal and presented our viewpoint," she said.
Echoing similar sentiments, his father, Ashok Trivedi, said that members of the civil society are extending all kinds of support to their son.
"The entire country is with my son and they are supporting us. Everyone is supporting us, including the India Against Corruption (IAC) team and all other social groups in the region," Trivedi said.
He is facing charges of sedition for allegedly insulting national symbols in his sketches during the three-day fast of veteran social activist and anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare at Mumbai in December 2011.
While participating in Hazare's three-day fast at the Bandra-Kurla complex, Trivedi had sketched the cartoon of 'Mother India' dressed in a tri-colour sari, while a politician and a bureaucrat pin her down and try to assault her.
The cartoon was titled 'Gang Rape of Mother India'.
In the second cartoon the four lions in the national emblem, the Ashoka Chakra were replaced with foxes and the engraved motto 'Satyameva Jayate' was replaced with 'Brashtameva Jayate'.
The final cartoon portrayed the parliament as a national toilet.
Recipient of this year's acclaimed 'Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award', Trivedi remained defiant and raised slogans against the government as he emerged out of the court. (ANI)
