Google Earth man Foresman says 'Kiwis addicted to cars'

Wellington, Mon, 03 Sep 2012 ANI

Wellington, Sept 3 (ANI): Former Chief Scientist for Nasa's Google Earth Programme Dr Tim Foresman has pointed out that New Zealand is addicted to cars, is building too many roads, and needs to get its energy policies under control.

Foresman, a former environmental adviser to the United Nations, pointed out that 'New Zealand needs to take a closer look at how we move people and stuff around.'

"Our car addiction' ensures 'mass transit is in the Iron Age for New Zealand... you're back there with the Neanderthals in terms of your energy and transportation plans," he told Fairfax Media NZ,

According to Stuff.co.nz, he also said that he believed New Zealand should have chosen a carbon tax rather than a trading system as a way to reduce carbon emissions.

Foresman's remarks came after delivering a lecture to pupils at an Auckland school.

Foresman is currently in New Zealand to attend the 'Digital Earth' summit in Wellington. (ANI)
