Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Sep.2 (ANI): Dramatic scenes were witnessed outside Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal's residence here on Sunday, when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists protested over Coalgate revelations.
Police had to launch a baton charge to disperse opposition workers, as they unrelentingly shouted slogans over the coal block allocation scam.
They were objecting to Jaiswal's statement that there was no need for re-allocating coal blocks.
The Congress also dared the Opposition to take action against Ministers of BJP -ruled states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka.
Coalgate has paralysed parliament after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said that the under-priced sales of coalfields would have cost the national exchequer as much as 33 billion dollars in lost revenues.
The BJP is demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh since he headed the Coal Ministry between 2006 and 2009, when many of the sales occurred.
However, Dr. Singh had rejected the CAG's observations as 'misleading' and 'flawed', and blamed the opposition parties for thwarting the efforts of his government to bring a policy of competitive bidding.
Dr. Singh also ruled out any possibility of quitting the top post despite the BJP firm on its demand for his resignation over the coal blocks allocation issue. (ANI)
