New Delhi, Aug 24 (ANI): Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court judgement on Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on 2G scam, which he said must be accepted by all.
"We all respect the judgements of the Supreme Court. It may so happen that at times the apex court rejects our plea or at times accepts it. The decision should be welcomed by all. We are of course satisfied with the verdict. The court has granted relief to a learned colleague of ours," Khurshid said.
Meanwhile, Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal said the Supreme Court verdict clearly justifies the fact that Chidambaram is not guilty in the 2G case.
"I have told you before that Chidambaram was not guilty. Because we knew what was the reality and today it was proved that Chidambaram is not guilty and he had no hand in it," said Sibal
"That time (Janata Party chief Subramanian) Swamy had stated that these people from the government are illiterate who are saying this. I do not know who are illiterate because now the Supreme Court has proved it," he added.
Earlier, describing the apex court decision as a bad judgement, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said: "The portion that was read out in the judgement was not what I had argued. In my petition I had only sought to prove a national loss, but the judgement was based on criminal conspiracy".
"I did not even talk about any conspiracy. Neither did I mention of any conspiracy. I didn't have to prove criminal intent which I did not, I only said there is a national loss," he added.
Swamy also warned that this decision will go against the government.
"Don't think that there was any need for investigation. With the evidence available a charge-sheet could have been filed," Swamy added.
In a huge relief for Chidambaram, the apex court today dismissed two petitions seeking a CBI investigation against Chidambaram in the 2G telecom scam. The Supreme Court judgement read, "Criminal conspiracy cannot be inferred merely because Chidambaram met A. Raja and DoT officials on spectrum pricing. Poor management in allocation of spectrum cannot be said to be product of criminal conspiracy."
Swamy had earlier moved the court challenging the trial court order, which had held that Chidambaram did not indulge in any criminal conspiracy in the 2G scam, and refused to make him an accused in the case. (ANI)
