Hyderabad, Aug 23 (IANS) Cathay Pacific, a leading international carrier, is set to expand its operations in India with a direct flight between Hyderabad and Hong Kong from December this year.

The Hong Kong-based airline Thursday announced that it would operate A330-300 on this route four times a week with a configuration of 44 seats in business class and 267 in economy.

The first flight from Hong Kong will land at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Dec 1.

With this, Hyderabad is the sixth Indian city to be served by Cathay Pacific. It is already operating flights to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai while its sister airline Dragonair is operating flights to Bangalore and is set to connect Kolkata from Nov 2 this year.

Tom Wright, general manager, South Asia, Middle East and Africa, Cathay Pacific, told reporters here that with Hyderabad-Hong Kong flight, the total number of their flights to India would go up to 46 a week.

"We are extremely excited to announce expansion of our operations in Hyderabad, thereby reinforcing the potential of the Indian market. With our award-winning products and services, will be able to offer world class experience to business and leisure travelers from Hyderabad," he said.

Wright said the flight would also offer connectivity to mainland China, destinations in North America, North Asia, Australia, New Zealand and over 167 destinations in 42 countries.

"With the development of IT industry and pharmaceutical companies in and around the city, Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing markets with corporate and student traffic along with huge potential for leisure travel," he added.

Vikram Jaisinghani, CEO, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), said they badly wanted a flight on Hyderabad-Hyderabad.

"It was one of the lacunas in our connection. We are privileged that a premium airline like Cathay Pacific has chosen Hyderabad," he said

Pointing out that Cathay Pacific is a member of worldwide alliance, Jaisinghani said the passengers from Hyderabad and India can derive its benefits.
