Jaipur, Aug 22 (ANI): Heavy downpour inundated several areas of this city, throwing normal life completely out of gear, here on Wednesday.
The woes of city residents were aggravated further due to water logging and dilapidated condition of roads as rainwater gushed into the shops and residential colonies.
Schools remained shut owing to the heavy downpour and the office-goers had to struggle to reach their workplace on time.
Though the rainfall provided relief from the scorching heat, the locals were seen struggling as they walked in the overflowing drain water.
Ram Prasad Saini, a resident, said the heavy downpour had hit power supply and urged the state government to take steps to maintain the drainage system.
"This heavy rainfall has occurred after 20 years and it is one of the heaviest since 1982. It has caused lot of damage and many people have suffered due to electricity shocks and it has also hit the power supply. It has resulted in the death of two to three people due to drowning. We have saved two to three children from the waterlogged areas. We urge for a proper drainage system," Saini said.
Adding to the agony of the locals were the roads, which had caved in due to incessant rainfall and brought to light the poor quality of construction material that was used.
Sudesh Thakur, another resident, informed that at least four people have died due to electricity shock.
"Houses of several people are inundated and four people died of electricity shock," Thakur said.
Simultaneously, due to water logging, traffic movement was slow resulting in traffic jams on the Mirza Ismail (MI) Road - city's lifeline, Statue Circle, Tonk Road and Khatipura.
The local authorities have launched rescue and relief operations in the inundated areas.
Recently, rains spread to lentil-producing areas of the state, that needed water this season.
The rains were as high as 248 percent above average in the parched parts of the desert state.
The weather office had forecast more rain in Rajasthan, improving the outlook for winter-sown crops such as rapeseed, which are grown in irrigated areas.
The city received 160 mm rainfall during two-and-a-half hours of continuous rains on Wednesday. (ANI)
