Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir), Aug.21 (ANI): Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri District are encouraging girls in militancy- hit areas to take up vocational training.

Residents of this district have been prey to militancy several times and had suffered from it in the last two decades.

Most girls had to discontinue their education due to the tension in the valley, which is why there are increasing cases of school dropouts.

The District Officer, Handicrafts Department, Khalid Wafa Choudhary, said that people come from far-flung areas to receive training, so that they can get employed in the long run.

"Anyone can come and learn handicraft work, be it educated or illiterate people. The purpose of this training is that a person can become self-employed and earn his living," he said.

On the other hand, the shackles of poverty have trapped some of them.

Several vocational training centres were set up in the district under the Tribal Sub Plan to aid the residents to earn their livelihood.

Meanwhile, a teacher at the centre hoped that these centres become permanent in the long run, as they were really benefiting school dropouts and other girls who had to discontinue their education due to certain reasons.

"There are 15 girls in my centre, who come everyday and they work sincerely. They work the entire day with utmost dedication. I feel this is a boon for all of us. The centre that has been established under the Tribal Sub Plan and we are really benefiting. We hope that the government sets up more centres in the future and hope that they make these centres permanent," she said.

A student said that the girls at the centre were extremely happy with the training they were being imparted, adding that they have learnt several new handicrafts.

"We are very happy that the government has given us these centres, they are really benefiting us. Girls who have been unable to receive education come here. We are getting a lot of opportunities to learn and we have learnt sewing and knitting," said Sheeza Khanam, a student.

The Handicraft Department has set up 15 centres that are training girls to knit, sew, and make unique creations.

The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.

The row over Kashmir remains an emotionally charged issue for both India and Pakistan. (ANI)
