New Delhi, Aug.19 (ANI): Former Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna was honoured at a retrospective seminar held here over the weekend.

The government-owned Directorate of Films Festivals (DFF) and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organised the event that was attended by several leading personalities, including the late actor's widow, Dimple Kapadia.

Among others who attended the function were Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajeev Shukla and Khanna's younger daughter Rinkie Khanna.

A special souvenir in memory of Khanna was also released on the occasion, while several speakers paid rich tribute to the late superstar.

Sharing his views with media persons, Shukla said that Khanna had given the first true example of superstardom to Indian cinema

"Not only did he set an example of what made a superstar, but he also acted in such romantic and entertaining films, that today even the younger generation looks at the songs of those films with interest," said Shukla.

"I believe that he wanted to come back to the film industry but did not find much support among the people, which was unfortunate, or else, if an actor of his calibre did even character roles, than he would have pulled it off beautifully," added Shukla.

"He performed his role honestly even in politics, and his contributions have been eminent. He was always a happy person, I never saw him sad faced," said Shukla.

Known for his shy smile and flamboyant looks, Khanna was often referred to as Bollywood's first real superstar, someone who had a fanatical fan base among women, thanks to the many romantic hits in which he starred during the 1970s.

At the peak of his career, women would symbolically marry his posters and write letters to him in blood, according to actors who worked with him.

His last appearance before the camera was an ad for a ceiling fan brand earlier this year, where his gaunt and haggard appearance distressed many fans. (ANI)
