Act against Mumbai rioters: activist

Mumbai, Aug 19 (IANS) An activist Sunday asked the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) to take suo moto cognizance of the abuse of policemen and policewomen during a protest march here Aug 11.

Two people were killed and another 100 injured as a mass protest by Muslim groups to condemn attacks on Muslims in Myanmar and Assam turned violent at Azad Maidan.

RTI activist Anil Galgali urged the rights body to register a case against the rioters, organisers and perpetrators of the crime and punish the offenders.

"Some protesters started rioting and caused largescale destruction of public property, media and government vehicles and property," Galgali said in his letter to MSHRC.

"The rioters attacked the policemen and women on duty, along with common citizens and passersby. They even molested women police staff."

Mumbai Police has arrested 24 in connection with the case.

All of them have been booked for murder, attempt to murder, molestation, attacks on police and public, damage to public and private property, theft of government weapons, unlawful assembly and other charges.
