Congress hits out at Mamata on I-Day speech

West Bengal,Politics, Wed, 15 Aug 2012 IANS

Kolkata, Aug 15 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her Independence Day speech criticising the central government and asked her to practise self-restraint.

Although the Congress and Trinamool Congress have an alliance in the state and at the centre, Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, in her speech took a dig at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on fertiliser prices, national highways and cards for below poverty line (BPL) sections.

Reacting to the allegations, state Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya said: "She is attacking the central government and in a wrong way. I advise her not to sweat over the working of the central government. She should think only on the matters related to the state government.

"She will be in the union cabinet and simultaneously she will criticise it -- that cannot continue. I think she should practise self-restraint," the Congress leader said.

The two parties, Congress and Trinamool, have often locked horns over various issues from presidential elections, Lokpal bill, and foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail, among others.

"How could she speak all these as women are continuously being attacked in her regime? First the chief minister has to protect the respect of these women, then only she could advise the Centre," Bhattacharya added.
