New Delhi, Aug. 10 (ANI): Commenting on Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department Minister Shivpal Yadav's bizarre advice to state officials, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lalji Tandon on Friday said a minister's statement is like a policy of the government, and if he says so, then the government is offering a license to steal public money.
"Right now 'corruption' is the most burning issue of the country. There is political turmoil in the country over corruption, and in such a scenario, a minister should be careful while making statements," Tandon said.
"A minister's word symbioses the government's intention and if he has said this; then it means that the provincial government is giving a license to the officials to loot the state's wealth. A minister should not be giving such statements," he added.
Shivpal Yadav, however, today made a U-turn on his 'steal a little' comment, and accused the media of misquoting him. Shivpal said he was talking about the preceding Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Government.
"Media didn't release the full quote. I was talking about the former BSP government," Yadav told media here. "The press was not supposed to be present in the meeting," he added.
Shivpal Yadav had earlier told PWD officials in Etah that it is okay to steal a little, but not loot, as long as they work hard.
"I told PWD officials that if you work hard, you can steal a little, but not behave like dacoits," he said. Cutting across party lines, politicians condemned the statement, saying corruption in India cannot end as long as such people are in power.
Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) asked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to take firm action against Shivpal Yadav over his bizarre advice to state officials. (ANI)
