'India-China border peaceful due to sincere efforts'

Jammu, July 31 (IANS) The governor of Arunachal Pradesh and former army chief Gen (retd) J.J. Singh Tuesday said a peaceful India-China border is an outcome of sincere efforts and great statesmanship by both the countries.

Talking to media after releasing his book at a school in Jammu, where he had studied 52 years ago, Gen. Singh said sincere efforts by both India and China aimed at peaceful borders "is visible now".

"At the highest level great statesmanship has been shown by leaders of both the countries (India and China) and situation on the borders is peaceful. Apart from that we have to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety and security of our country," Gen. Singh said.

The former army chief was in Jammu to release his autobiography "Soldiers' General," which was first released in Jammu and then in Srinagar. He made it a point to release the book at a function in Model Academy, from where he had matriculated 52 years back.

Replying to a question if the government was planning to raise mountain strike corps, Gen. Singh said: "The government has approved raising of certain foundations which are being done as part of the plan to ensure security of borders."

He added: "The government is very aware of what the responsibilities are to ensure that safety and security of our country is kept at a level which is desired and we don't lower our guard."

Giving a brief about his autobiography, Gen. Singh said he has put his experience of the armed forces in the book. "Beside that I have put my family's association with the armed forces which started with my grandfather who joined the army in 1913 as a sepoy and what needs to be done to improve the situation."

"My book also mentions about Pakistan and China and what needs to be done to improve relations with neighbouring countries," he added.
