Agartala, July 30 (ANI): Unemployed youth from different parts of northeast are being trained here to make leather goods to groom them into self- sufficient entrepreneurs.

Tripura's Arindam Halder, one of the trainers in the project, is not sparing any effort in training unemployed youth and channelising their energy for productive purposes.

Under the program, Halder is ensuring that students get a solid foundation in designing leather goods like footwear, bags, and garments.

Earlier, footwear artisans used to learn on the job from their elders, but now, the state government is training them in rural institutes of technology.

Interacting with reporters, Halder said, "This training will help them, as there is a huge demand for leather goods in national and international markets. If they can get some financial help and are provided with proper raw materials, they will be able to produce good leather products, which will be able to compete in Kolkata or Delhi."

Students undergo yearlong training that includes both theory and practical lessons.

Adequate equipment and machinery are available at the training centre so that the young artisans learn how to design the right product for the right market and also how to develop their design in the most efficient way.

The interest shown by these youth is an indication of their desire to actualize their potential.

Prasanjit Hrishi Das, a trainee, said, "My sister completed this course and inspired me to join it. Trainers teach well and we have learned to make different kinds of leather products. I get a monthly stipend of Rs.900 and I am saving it to buy a machine later for my own business that will help me in my own production."

Echoing similar sentiments, Centu Hrishi Das, another trainee said, "I have learnt to make Derby and Oxford (shoes), ladies purse, various jackets, ladies shoes etc. I hope after completing the course I will be able to earn at least Rs 7000 to 8000 a month."

The initiative is being supported by the Welfare Department.

Most of the artisans belong to backward and minority communities and the training helps them become self reliant. (ANI)
