Win some, lose some: Super Saina storms into next round, Jwala-Diju disappoint

London, Sun, 29 Jul 2012 ANI

London, July 29 (ANI): Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal trounced her Swiss opponent Sabrina Jaquet 21-9, 21-4, kicking off her Olympic campaign in clinical fashion, while the mixed doubles duo of Jwala Gutta and V. Diju lost their second successive game here on Sunday.

Sabrina, who qualified for the Games by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2012 European Championship in Karlskrona, Sweden, proved no match to a ruthless Saina, who showcased an immaculate display of attacking strokeplay.

The 22-year-old Indian who came into the tournament close on the heels of Thailand Grand Prix Gold and Indonesian Super Series Premium triumph last month, took 12 minutes to wrap up the first game, before sealing the issue in her favour by winning the second game in just 10 minutes.

Saina, the world number 5, will now face Tan Lianne on Monday in a must-win game for her, since the Belgian has already won her game.

Earlier, the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju jeopardised their chances of making the knockout round after suffering a second successive defeat.

The Indians, who were beaten by third-seeded Indonesian pair in the first match on Saturday, lost on Sunday morning to Denmark's Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl in straight games, 12-21, 16-21, in a Group C match at the Wembley Arena.

The World No. 13 duo was no match for their eighth-ranked opponents in the first game, losing it in 13 minutes.

They put up a better show in the second but it wasn't enough to trouble the Danes.

Jwala-Diju will play South Korea's Jung Eun Ha and Yong Dae Lee in their must win final group game on Tuesday. (ANI)
