Sydney, July 28 (ANI): Australia's lone wrestler in the London Olympics, Farzad Tarash headed back to home country Iran for training under a specific diet to build his body before the Games, which included the famous 'kebab', a worldwide phenomenon that the Persians claim as their own.
Tarash chose Iran, the country of his birth, to finalise preparations for the 66kg freestyle competition in the London 2012 Olympics not because of his heritage or the quality of training available in Tehran, but because of his preference for 'kebabs' in his Iranian diet.
"Kebabs, yeah, I had a couple. I shouldn't have been having them but I can treat myself every now and then," The Age quoted Tarash, as saying.
"For me, the diet is a lot easier over in Iran. I'm used to the Iranian food. The normal food for the diet is obviously salads and things like that but also if you're eating some traditional food it works a lot easier with your body," he added.
The national champion in his division since 2005, Tarash was schooled under the legendary Melbourne trainer Sam Parker and is carrying the can for Australia in the sport after two other Olympic hopefuls, Ivan Popov and Ali Abdo surprisingly missed out on places in the Olympics, the paper said.
"It's one of the biggest parts of competing, how you keep your diet. If the food works well with the body and you feel great then you can control your weight and all the other things as well. My favourite would be the potato salad, they make it very special. There's chicken and peas and all sorts of other things in it," the wrestler said.
Tarash is also now being trained by his younger brother Mehrdad, who himself missed out on an Olympic selection through the challenging Africa-Oceania qualifying system. (ANI)
